Friends of Cawston Greenway
We are a newly formed group called Friends of Cawston Greenway. We are really friendly and laid back and would love to welcome new members who want to get involved with our greenway project
We are going to turn part of the disused and horribly overgrown Rugby to Leamington railway-line that runs through Cawston, into a nature and butterfly reserve.
We are working with Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, Sustrans (who own the land) and Warwickshire Butterfly Conservation to ensure that we do things properly and to protect the existing wildlife habitat.
We will create an interesting and attractive green corridor that leads to Draycote Water and Country Park. This will benefit local residents who will have cycle and walking access to Draycote without having to set foot on a busy road.
There is also access to Cawston Bluebell Woods and Cawston Reservoir, just after the bridge that crosses the A4071 Coventry Road. A ramp will need to be put in to allow safe and proper access down the embankment to the bridlepaths that run through the woods, and onwards to Dunchuch and Bilton.
Creating disabled access is a high priority for us. We want the greenway to be used by all.
We will create a safe and exciting environment for all the local schools in the area. The schools will be able to do field trips and help the children to really understand what local wildlife exists on their doorstep.
We also want to create a sustainable nature reserve that will attract colonies of endangered butterflies such as the Grizzled Skipper, and insects such as the Bloody Nosed Beetle, which has been spotted on the site, whilst taking care to nurture the existing badger colony, which is the biggest in Warwickshire, and great crested newts, which currently exist.
This is a fantastic project with many benefits to the local community, who are really getting behind it, which is great for community spirit!
From a personal point of view, conservation work is very therapuetic and incredibly rewarding. It's great to be doing something for the greater good, and with like-minded people too.
